For Ray

Fitch was at the end of his rope.

He wouldn't go as far as using the word 'desperate' (yet), but he was definitely dangerously close to hitting that mark.

Before he'd gotten to the Island, Fitch didn't think that there was another woman in existence as impossible to deal with as Jackie. And maybe there hadn't been, not back in his reality. Of course, since this reality was the one where all other realities converged, he'd found one. And, as luck would have it, she would be the only one to give him the time of day (despite her better sense of judgement, he was sure) and he'd wind up getting involved with.

He wasn't even sure what the fuck to call what it was they were doing, and his sense of self-preservation was too great, which didn't allow him to even consider asking. What he did know, was that he was in way over his head, and that he needed help.

At a loss for anywhere better to turn, Fitch had wound up at the church, seated out on the front step. He'd started to go in, but considering he was the son of lesbians in search of some sort of direction when it came to his former-vampire not-girlfriend, he couldn't make himself cross the threshold.

God was supposed to be omnipresent. If that was the case, he'd get the message, even if Fitch decided to stay outside.

Fraser might have been zero help when it came to matters of the heart - and Ray chose to believe that was because he was Fraser and not because he and Asher were far from normal anyway - but he was pretty damn good when it came to making things. Big surprise there.

Ray had signed up for archery classes and when it came to whittling his own arrows, he'd gone straight to Fraser. None of the sticks he'd brought with him were suitable though (big surprise there too), so he had gone in search of just the right kind. Despite an extremely detailed description from Fraser, Ray still had no clue what he was looking for, but since Fraser had gone to look as well, he wasn't that bothered.

Still, he looked like he was making an effort at least, bending down now and then to inspect a twig. Heading towards the church was an unconscious decision, propelled by the thought of shade and a place to sit indoors. It seemed like someone had had the same idea as him, but Fitch didn't look like he was enjoying it as much as Ray undoubtedly would.

He glanced up from his twig and shielded his eyes from the sun with a hand. "Did He send you out to the naughty step?"

Coop looked like Frannie used to whenever she had a confession to make that she didn't want to admit to. She usually felt better afterwards though, so maybe Coop would as well.

"All the better to shoot things with," Ray joked as he approached, but it kinda fell flat considering Coop didn't know what he was planning the stick to end up as. "What kept you out here?"

It was a lot to take in in one go but Ray was able to catch the gist of Coop's outburst.

"I think I'm gonna need to sit down," he warned him, gesturing for Coop to shift over to make some space. "I take it you're talking about the lovely Danica?"

Ray probably should have been proud that from the outside, they seemed normal. As it was though, he just laughed and shook his head.

"No... He's hard work. I rarely know where I am with him. Medicating him's not a bad idea though," he smirked. "I'll keep that in mind for when times are really tough."

"Lots of arguments. Threats of physical violence." Ray thought for a moment. "Actual physical violence. He thought I kidnapped him once."

Ray still maintained it wasn't a real kidnapping, on account of the fact there was no rope or duct tape involved. "You know... The usual. Things with you and Danica not so good then? Pregnancy scare aside."

"Right," Ray nodded, understanding the unspoken. Asher was definitely the Danica Lite version between the two siblings but he understood some of what Coop was going through. And given what Ray knew about her and what she had done, both on and off the island, he didn't envy Coop's situation one bit.

"Y'know..." Ray didn't really know what to say or what excuses he could make, so he went with plain facts. "They're old. Like, really, really old. They're set in their ways. They know what they like and what they don't like. Personally, I think we're doing pretty well, even having them give us the time of day." But that hadn't been enough for Ray, so maybe it wasn't enough for Fitch either.

"Listen, Coop, all you gotta do is figure out if you like her enough to stick it out until you wear her down."

"It may take a lifetime or two..." Ray drawled, sending Coop a sympathetic sidelong glance. "What d'you even see in her? I mean, she's so," he made claw-hands in their air, "rawr and you're so," the hands turned grabby and his expression more timid, "y'know... Not a match I woulda bet money on."

"Okay," Ray conceded, "you've got a point. Neither of us have chosen the easy life." For Coop, that was definitely an understatement. "Asher's worth it though. Make sure she is too before you get too deep."

He turned his head to Coop, giving him a knowing look. "Like nearly-knocking-her-up deep." He shook his head again in disbelief, humor in his next words. "I can't even imagine what a kid with both of you as its parents would be like, man."

"Well, I will," Ray told him, giving Coop a comforting pat on the back, "but Asher might not." Letting people live things down when it involved his sister? Ray figured he was pretty safe in saying that wouldn't happen any time soon.

"Devil baby," he laughed. Devilish good looks, anyway. "Organ harvester, maybe? Your surgical skills and Danica's...entrepreneurial spirit?"

Ray might never know what it was that had brought Coop and Danica together, but if nothing else, at least it proved the age old theory that opposites attract.

"What's it like?" Ray asked, realizing that he actually knew very little about Cooper's problems. And this was a guy he considered a kind-of friend. "I mean, aside from the inappropriate grabbing during awkward moments."

The worst feeling of lack of control Ray had ever experienced had pretty much been what had brought him and Asher together, so really, it was probably the best feeling with hindsight. So Ray found it hard to empathise with Coop in that respect.

"How the hell'd you end up as a doctor then?" He asked good-naturedly. "Isn't control a big must have?"

"Yeah... Sounds it." If 'it' actually meant totally disgusting and probably the most unrelaxing thing ever. "We don't exactly have a bustling ER here, you know." Maybe that was why Coop was doing whatever he was doing with Danica. She was his ER, hectic personified.

"You must be going crazy."

"I remember," Ray replied, thinking back on the vigil Asher had kept on his sister the entire time. It hadn't exactly been conducive to his investigation.

"With those two around, there's more than you would think," he added, not allowing himself to say any more than that. Shooting a man, pushing Del down the stairs, just two examples of crimes that were brushed under the carpet when it came to them.

Ray clasped his hands together, not great with awkward silences.

"So... You feel better, right?" A problem shared was a problem apparently halved after all. "I helped?"

"Good. Great. Glad I could share my pearls."

At least now Ray knew not to go to Fitch for advice when things weren't so good with Asher. He wasn't exactly waving a Talos flag in support or anything, despite dating the head of the clan.

"Might wanna keep this conversation to ourselves. I'm not sure either of them would be too keen on us sharing notes."
